In 1998 a very sensitive telescope suspended from a balloon 40,000 metres above Antarctica. The project, named Boomerang (Balloon Observations of Millimetric Extragalactic Radiation and Geophysics) was studying fundamental cosmic parameters, and the findings support a flat Universe.

The idea is that the universe's expansion has been so great since that Big Bang so long ago, that space now has been stretched to a point where it is essentially flat.
