Is there a darker side to Canada?

Dear Mountie,

My girlfriend and I currently live in Sheffield, England but I would like to move to Canada to live and work in your beautiful country. It looks great but is it all skiing at the weekend and breath-taking views or is there a darker side we should be aware of?
