Little House on the Prairie started in 1974 and by the end of the series, almost ten years later, Michael Landons hair had grown so big it needed two crew members constant attention, an extra trailer, and increasingly ludicrous plot lines, diverting the publics attention from his flamboyant coiffure.

Regarding your fear of lofts: It is probably an unrelated case of misplaced Olfactophobia. You should count yourself lucky you don't suffer from the much more debilitating Arachibutyrophobia.
